The Life Education Canterbury Duck Race is a fun day out for the whole family. Raising much needed funds to help deliver the Life Education programme to school children in Canterbury, the duck race takes place on the first Sunday in November on the beautiful Te Papa Otakaro, Avon River Precinct.
Ducks are dropped into the Avon River from The Bridge of Remembrance and then travel downstream 650 metres towards the finish line at Victoria Square. At Victoria Square a small event village hosts a BBQ, face painting for the children, coffee and yummy food vendors and of course Harold the Giraffe.
There are three duck races on the day: 1. Corporate Duck Race See businesses that supported the Duck Race compete dressed and decorated to represent their organisation - with great prizes up for grabs! 2. School Duck Race: Ducks decorated by school children who have participated in the Life Education programme race for the finish line. 3. General Duck Race: Approximately 1000 small rubber ducks are launched into the river racing for the finish line. These are sold via a raffle system and can be purchased four weeks before the event. On the day if we haven't sold out prior there will be ducks left to purchase 40 minutes before the event, but make sure you bring cash!
